Most people come into therapy because of some sort of emotional crisis: depression, anxiety, interpersonal problems, family problems, or some other area of difficulty. My immediate task is to understand what is going on, to convey this understanding to the patient, and to suggest ways to help improve the situation. For many of my patients, a short course of psychotherapy is enough to help them recover a sense of competency in their lives.
I am by interest and choice a depth psychologist. I have been trained in psychodynamic and Jungian psychotherapeutic approaches. I have deep respect for the dynamic unconscious processes that shape peoples lives. From this perspective, psychological symptoms can be imagined as a reminder of something important not attended to in our conscious lives. Symptoms have a vital role in supplying information that helps in providing a wider range of choices for one’s life.
